CARES, your local food pantry in Farmington Hills, is hosting Grateful Plateful Dinner to kick off the 2022 Grateful Plateful fundaising campaign.
We keep precise data on the number of people we feed each month. Based on 8 months of year-to-date data, trended through December 31, 2022, we are experiencing marked increases in the local need for basic food.
--The number of children we feed is projected to grow 63% by year end.
--The number of seniors we feed is projected to grow 30% over January 1 figures.
--The number of adults we is expected to increase 36% from the first of the year.
Brutal arithmetic: Taking the increased number of food insecure adults, children and seniors we are feeding and multiplying by the cost of food, inflating at the fastest rate in 43 years, CARES is experiencing:
--More than an 11% local wholesale food cost increases since January and a 14% increase for protein foods. The strain on fund raising is the highest in history for food pantries. Hungry children are the most affected.
Each month, we serve over 1,200 food-insecure individuals in nine communitites in Oakland and Wayne counties, with more families applying for assistance every day. Formerly food-secure adults, seniors and children are seeing hunger consequences due to the pandemic, rising cost of gas and housing along with food Inflation, which stretches our capacity to feed them all.
